The route between Fleetwood and Belfast was a major link between England and Ireland during the 1914-1918 war. Cargoes of men and horses, ammunition, cattle and other provisions that were in short supply came to England along this lifeline. The Belfast boats maintained the unbroken service throughout the war, relying on camoflage and a speed of 21 knots to dodge any U-boats around.
