Fleetwood lies at the entrance of the River Wyre. Because of this, access to Knott End has always been problematical. The bridge at Chard always meant a long detour through Pilling and Preesall. The ferry service always provided an easy access across the Wyre and was always extensively used. Caldervale was one such vessel. Here she runs into the jetty at Knott End to discharge another load of passengers.
