Once the trawlers had returned to port with their catches, the fish had to be unloaded. This was labour intensive and carried out by teams of men known as "Lumpers". Starting work in the early hours of the morning, these men worked in all weathers to get the catches unloaded in time for the auction. Baskets of fish were winched out of the hold and dragged over the slippery planks to the dockside. |
